Why Wales? Wales… CYMRU… a small land of hills, mountains and once industrial valleys. A nation proud of its history and determined to guard its own unique inheritance. A people with their own culture with many still speaking its own distinct tongue - Welsh - or 'Cymraeg' as the 'Cymro' or Welshman might say. A land littered by castles and forts - remnants of battles of independence with their Anglo Saxon neighbours. This is a land of contrast, the scenic north and west to the industrial south and east. The Christian heritage of Patrick and David to the magic of Merlin. The mountains of Snowdonia to the industrial lowlands. The mighty Revivals in 1854 and 1904/5 to the dryness of today. One thing never changes and that is the love of song that the Welsh have, this is the land of the mighty choirs, and we all know some of the international renowned singers who are from Wales. To hear a Welsh Male Voice Choir is a real treat, their love for singing becomes infectious. It seems that everyone is a talented singer. This is a land that Revival swept over, it is estimated that 100,000 in 1854 and 152,000 in 1904/5 accepted Jesus Christ as their Saviour. Many new Churches were birthed and two Pentecostal Denominations, The Elim Pentecostal Church and the Apostolic Pentecostal church have their roots in the Welsh Revival. This was a country changed totally, even in the coal mines, after the Revival, the pit ponies would not work. The only language they heard and understood was liberally interjected with swear words. When the miners spoke without curse words they did not understand the commands.
Visit the Churches and sites where The Revival Fire of God fell on a dry and hungry nation. This is an experience not to be missed, people are changed by this experience. You will have read about Evan Roberts, but others notable among the 152,000 estimated converts of the Revival are George & Stephen Jeffreys who later went on to found the Elim Movement, and David Powell Williams, the founder of the Apostolic Pentecostal church. It is also worth mentioning its effect on Rees Howells, intercessor and founder of the Bible College of Wales and David Lloyd George, who later became the British Prime Minister. The results of the Revival cannot be measured by the countless chapels that lie deserted on the Welsh hills today, but in the multitude of changed men and women who went on to effect the course of the twentieth century under the guidance of the Almighty.
Visit the Revival Churches and places; pray in the places where the Fire of God has fallen in the past. Pray for a fresh fire to fall upon this nation, and when it does, the bridge you have built between the Celtic Nations and your homeland will carry the Fresh Fire of God to your Country, your Home, your Family and your Church.
